I see what you mean. Possibly the in camera detail level was set really low, a good thing, as it allows better alteration in the grade. Certainly it's not a focus issue, as there is a definite plane of sharp focus in the CU shots.
Also colours and contrast are pretty washed out, again as you would have with BBC type settings - flattening things out to extend the dynamic range and preserve highlight and shadow detail, you then selectively boost it in the grade.
