XF100 Automatic Gain

Hi,

I'm fairly new to the XF100 so I am still getting used to it. Are there any noise benefits to using -6.0dB of gain vs. 0dB?

I ask because I notice that, when set to 'auto' the gain level will not drop itself below 0dB. Is it possible to allow a lower limit below 0dB in the same way that you can set an upper limit on the AGC?

Thanks,

Torsten.

Re: XF100 Automatic Gain

You can use it like an electronic ND filter and it may give a less noisy picture. So yes, when in bright sunlight use it - especially if you want depth of field.

Re: XF100 Automatic Gain

On my XF300, I always have AGC set to Off and the default Gain set to -/- 3 dB to have the least amount of noise in normal conditions. I use the ND filter settings to keep the iris to anywhere in the region below (in a numerical sense) f 6.8 for proper DOF and detail.

In my experience, there is much less noise at -6 db than at 0 db. I have my gain settings at -6, -3, and 0. I always try to shoot at -6.
