Preset vs. White balance
 

Will using a preset affect the white balance? I know the presets shift colors and modify them but I am was just thinking about it.. Wondering if I was using VividRGB and do a manual white balance if it would alter the temp...?

Hypothetically I do not believe it would, but I just would like someone to back up my theory...

The camera I generally shoot the most with is a DSR500. I got into the habit of using the presets with it because of the warmer than normal setups I have in the camera. White balancing would lose the warmth. For personal documentary work with the XH A1, I've been doing the same thing, though I haven't checked it out to be sure. It seems intuitive to me that white balancing is going to override the setup because whatever color temperature the lights are, white is going to read as pure white, which is the purpose of the white balance, whereas with the setup I am using, white is going to be a little warmer. So I use tungsten or daylight presets most of the time. The exception is when I'm shooting in an uncontrolled area and the color temperature is not 3200 or 5500, like those 4200K fluorescents, for example.

I concur with Bill here.. I use presets most of the time relevent to my light source (ie.tungsten or daylight) .. but at times they are obviously wrong..(mixed light sources)... I then white balance manually, until I get a colour balance I'm happy with.

To my mind white balancing manually all the time sets white things to true white.. which as we all know depending on the source they are not.. For me presets are often more accurate and seem to look more like what my eyes are seeing.

After all this I then go into Magic Bullet and add a hugely unnatural colourcast..LOL!!!

I just did a little test and it seems the preset feeds off the white balance information which is what I expected... I just was trying to make sure the balance would not be altered by the preset...
