Canon XH A1 automatic audio level

Hello,

I've studied the camera manual and the only mention it makes about the automatic setting for audio level is in reference to the camera's built-in mic (p.49). We're shooting using the XLR ports, one mic on the camera the other on a boom. It's too difficult for the camera operator to be monitoring mics if we set the audio level to manual so we were hoping and assuming that set at automatic we'd also be getting some automatic leveling of the XLR mics.

Can anyone help me with this one? Does the XH A1 automatic setting also apply to the XLRs?

Thanks.

John

Yep, automatic audio levels works on my xlr mic.

With respect to automatic level control (ALC) for audio, I believe that the audio system is default stereo, not totally independent channels. Thus a loud sound in one channel effects the gain/level in both channels equally in ALC mode. This is to preserve the stereo image (left/right position of sound sources).

Thus a loud sound near one microphone will effect the gain of the other. This may or may not be an issue for you, but keep it in mind of using ALC with separate microphones in a non-stereo configuration.
