Eventvideo shot with Xh-a1
 

Hi there everybody. Just though i should share this partyvideo.
Its shot completely on a Canon XH-A1, with an Ianiro divino extra light source in a dark venue.
Might give you some thoughts about its use in dark areas :)
I usually shoot with all settings on manual and with shutter speed 1/50 and with gain on -3 or 0. It helps alot in dark areas.
I use the blender to adjust the shots.
All graphics are done in Adobe After Effects and its edited in Adobe Premiere.

Very interesting as far as I could see on YouTube. I didn't know that the low light capability could be this good.

It was difficult to see if there was any grain as the quality of the video is rubbish on YouTube. Is there any chance of posting it on Vimeo that we can get a better look at it?

Could I ask a few questions:

What preset were you using.

What's 'the blender'. Excuse my ignorance.

How often did you use gain.

Did you experiment with a slower shutter speed and if so what was the result.

Loved the intro with the flyer! Do you have a link or something on a tutorial on how to do something like that? I haven't got into motion graphics yet and that intro, I thought, was great.

I had a divx version of it i tried uploading to vimeo but it seems it still got quite mangled up. Since im using Premiere to render out video, im not sure what quality would be best for vimeo. Any Suggestions?

I was not using any special presets. i turn off every preset and go all manual settings. I sometimes set the shutter speed as low as 1/25 since im shooting in 25F.
I never go any lower than 1/25 shutter speed because i dont want a slow effect on my video before post prod.

The blender is the "blender wheel" that decides how much light that comes into the lens. On the A1 you can change that manually while shooting since it is a ring right next to the zoom wheel.

I dont know about any tutorials on excactly the effect i did in After effect intro. I just used my fantasy. My only tip must be to create a layer with the flyer, pull it into 3d mode and create a 35mm camera. Move the camera around in 3d space in AE and do change the depth of field variables to change the blurryness and to create that DOF effect. Hope that helps you out a bit.

Andrew Cramer @ Videocopilot has some good tutorials in AE about moving around in 3d mode. Maybe this may help you out

What I meant is the presets in the menu ie the camera settings which can be used to change the look of the image the camera records.
Perhaps you haven't changed that since you got the camera. There are various settings, including some lowlight presets that you can programme in. You can find more information here:

Your Vimeo video is private..... I can't see it.

That would be the iris ring controlling the aperture.

Blender wheel... That's a good one!

The shutter is called the "blender" (not as in mixer) in norwegian.

Vegard: It's called the aperture or iris wheel in english, depending on your background.

Loved the video too (plan to film some club nights in London so thanks for sharing the settings!). I also thought the intro with the flyer was fantastic.

Its just in my crappy norwegian vocabulary its called blender. hehe
I just always thought it was a english word like all the other technical words we use in norway ;)

Filming in 25F with shutterspeed 1/25 kicks ass. just remember to never let gain go above 0. :)
