So I just bought an XHA1...
 

So, since I just bought one, does that mean that next week we're gonna see the XHA2? :) But seriously, why doesn't Canon offer a professional flash-based video solution?

Canon is almost never, ever at the leading edge of camcorder technology. I'm not saying they'll never be that, but overall their camcorder division is quite conservative. To be fair, when they *do* release camcorders with updated features/technology they're usually (IMO) top notch. I've had my XH-A1 for about 1.5 years now and if I were buying a camcorder today... I'd probably get one all over again; its still the best cam in its price range in my opinion.

As it stands now I think we can safely count on the XH-A2 to either exclusively use solid state recording or maybe even add it on top of an HDV recording option. I forget when the XH-A1 was released, but I wouldn't be surprised if the A2 comes out in 09.

What we can't safely count on, but I would love to see, is a Canon produced CF recorder that integrates nicely with existing XH-A1s. I think - if they priced it right - it would sell to a TON of A1 owners. It would also make the A1 more competitive with some of the newer cams without re-engineering the A1.

Steve, congratulations, you'll be so busy with the A1 you won't notice any A2, not in the next few months anyway :)

IMO load the Panalook2 custom preset, get a neutral Expodisc for custom white balancing and you won't look back.

I'd rather have a long lasting piece of technology that I'm satisfied with for years than be on the cutting edge. I'm very happy with my A1, especially when combined with my Letus Extreme. I'll be using for many years, and the FireStore unit takes care of my need for a tapeless workflow.

I'm sure I'll have my hands full with the A1! I have been reading the manual that is on Canon's website and it does a good job of simply explaining what the controls accomplish, but do you guys have a good suggestion (book, video, etc...) for how to really dive into the advanced operation of this camera?

The Vasst training was very helpful to me along with the manual and this forum. I am selling *** SOLD *** my DVD because after watching it once, I have digested all the information.
