Cannot Capture in HDV on XH A1

Hi all,

this is my first post and I hope that this question hasn't been answered elsewhere.

I've just got a Canon XH-A1. When I try and capture (file transfer?) from the HDV tape via firewire it won't recognise the footage. It works when capturing in DV quality though. I suspect it is a codec related issue. I'm using the default video import in Vista. I'm somewhat loath to start installing codecs willy-nilly but if that's what I need to do then so be it.

Editing software I use is mainly VirtualDub and AviSynth (yes, I'm cheap). Is there anyway I can import the HDV footage without Console and/or Premiere?

Also, do you recommend taking the DV cassette out after use or just leaving it in there?

Any help with specific codecs (preferably open source) would be appreciated?

You can use HDVSplit. it's a free utility. It will generate the mpeg out as .m2t file. Google it.

Hi guys and gals,

Sorry about the ignorance of my first post. Thanks Taky, HDVSplit worked a treat. For anyone interested, for those using VirtualDub and AviSynth, and want to read the m2t file into Vdub. I create the following AviSynth Script

DirectShowSource("C:\Users\lwbannister\Desktop\test.m2t")

If you want to convert YUV to RGB then add the line

ConvertToRGB(matrix="rec709", interlaced=true)

if you are shooting progressive then the ConvertToRGB parameters are

ConvertToRGB(matrix="rec709")

I then load the script into VirtualDub and save it as a lossless Huffy avi in all it's HD glory to be used later.

Anyway, thanks for putting up with my teething probs

Cheers

Laurence
