Anyway to get a Rode Videomic to attach to the XH-A1's mic holder?

Or is it doomed to use the hot shoe up top? I havent bought a mic yet and was wondering.

The way I use my Audio Technica mic with the A1 is to cut out a small strip of a black towel! I wrap it around the mic and then place it in the holder... it seems to fill the void and is actually a fairly tight/secure fit!

Unfortunately the VideoMic is shoe-mount only. Why don't you just get the NTG-1? It's the same mic element, only made of metal and phantom powered.

One option if you really wanted the VideoMic is to cut a dowel rod the same diameter as the holder, and attach a shoe to it.

I use the Rode SM5 shockmount with my NT1 mic. Works perfect.

Another brilliant way to get a regular size shotgun mic into the mic holder on the A1 is to pick up three #15 rubber o-rings from the plumbing section of your local Lowe's or Home Depot. Put those on the mic and they fit PERFECTLY in the grooves of the mic holder on the A1. And, since they're rubber, they act to some extent as a shock mount as well...

There are gadgets, such as the "J-Rod", that fit into the mic-clamp to give you either a shock-mount or another shoe mount. I think one of the Rode shock-mounts works this way, too.

Why don't you want it on the top shoe-mount?

My vote would be for an NTG-2 + Rycote Softie + shock-mount. The NTG-2 is the same as the NTG-1, except you have the option of battery-power as well as 48v phantom power, so is a little more versatile. The sound is at least as good as the AT-897 and, to my ears, is a match for the much more expensive Senn. ME66+k6. You'll need good wind-shielding for it - but that's equally true of the VideoMic, and it's probably easier to arrange for the NTG-2.
