XHA1 Does Not Fully Power Up In Camera Modes

I've been working with my XHA1 for a couple months, now, and rented/borrowed units for well over a year. I'm QUITE aware of the STANDBY/LOCK switch, and I assure everyone that it is correctly positioned.

I've also performed a reset (remove power source, hold tiny reset button under LCD screen down with paperclip for ten seconds) and that has not solved it either.

So now Canon is asking me to send the camera back for repair, and I have to part with it for up to three weeks for this process to take place.

VCR mode works fine. I can pop in a tape and play it and see it onscreen.

But none of the Camera modes power up completely. I hear the tape drive starting up - it makes the usual sounds - and the LCD screen shows an "activated" black but there is no image from the lens/sensor and no text on the screen.

Is there anyone else who's experienced this with the XHA1?

I had something similar happen after I got caught in a rain shower without my rain blimp. The technical explanation I got amounted to "it's done boogered up, send it in." You don't want to know what THAT cost.....:) / Battle Vaughan/miamiherald.com video team

Hi

I answered another XH-A1 user this some time ago. Below you will find what I wrote:

"I've had the same problem this summer. The camcorder suddenly just died. No matter how the switches where moved the camcorder was dead. Sometimes when I turned on the camcorder I could see that it received sound as the level indicator inside the ring moved. The zoom control on the right side worked (as I could see that the lens elemets moved) but not the ring or the controller on the handle.
In VCR mode, everything was working.

I sent the camcorder in for repair as it still was under guarantee. I also had contact with the repair man and he said that it was a simple problem. It was bad contact in a connector to the optical unit which made the camcorder unusable.

I don't know if you're having the same problem with your camcorder but as you describe the problem it's possible. I think this is a very bad sign as a bad connector inside the camcorder can stop it from working. It feels unreliable as it can happen anytime and there is no way to fix it in the field and it has to bee sent in for service.

Good luck with your camcorder!"

/Bo
