capture problemo.

I just got my XHA1 and am trying to capture in FCP6. I have my A1 in VCR/PLAY mode, my DV firewire cable connected, and FCP doesn't recognize the camera when I open FCP, and when I open log and capture I get "Unable to Initialize Capture Device"..."device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly."
My capture presets are set as HDV1080i60, HDV, HDV Firewire basic. I shot my footage in HDV60i, but was recording over standard DV footage from before (which I didn't want to do, but had a shoot, and didn't have any other tapes...is that a problem too?)
anyways, I've been reading that a lot of people have had problems setting up their A1 for capture, but none that I read fully fixed my problem.
thanks.

EDIT:
i was reading before that someone fixed their problem by turning OFF HD Down Convert...but those options were ghosted out for me so I was confused...I took my DV cable out though, and they unghosted, I changed HD Downconvert from ON > OFF and now my problem has been solved
question though - why does it ghost the options?
and maybe someone can explain the HD Down Convert a little better than the manual?
thanks.
