Jag35 + HXA1?
 

Greetings all!

I was looking into getting a 35mm adapter for my XHA1, but it is far too costly. So I am thinking about getting the basic JAG35ST for my HV30, and then a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens, and then mixing the footage between the XHA1 and the HV30. Would this be an alright plan, and would the footage of the HV30 be subpar? Would i need to purchase rails and such?

Well, I can only say about the lens. I just got that today and LOVE it! It lets in so much light! LOVE IT!

Anyway, Great piece of glass. Highly recommend it. If you want to pony the extra cash, you could look into getting the 35mm f1.8. It was about $60 more if I remember correctly.

Both of the Nikon lenses mentioned are Auto Focus. Are you sure you want to use an Auto Focus lens on a 35mm adapter? And can you even use an Auto Focus lens on a 35mm adapter without some kind of aditional adapter for the AF?

I own an A1 and am looking to purchase the Letus adapter in the next week or two, so I am on the hunt for good lenses as well!

the letus would be amazing but then i would have to get rails and get the initial chunk of cash for the letus....

are there any cheap diys for 72mm adapters haha

I feel your pain brother. I am a new/returning film student and have managed to get together the funds for the rails, letus, external monitor and 1 lens for now. The purchase will hurt but I am doing it for the love!

All the other adapters I have researched haven't been all that great... and with the A1, I want the footage to remain as good as possible.

What about the Auto Focus lenses? I am under the impression that one would want to use Manual Focus lenses for a 35mm adapter? Maybe with a follow focus system?

You can use the AF lenses being that they won't hook up to any contacts. With out power they can free spin and work in Manual mode (I am 90% sure of that) Mine is personally a MF lens, but I might return it for the AF if they get it in stock.

The lenses won't and can't Auto Focus itself, but it will still fit on the adapter. Do becarful about which model it is though. Like my lens is almost full manual except for some metering and distance info. If you get a DX lens that may not have a switch to make it full Manual and then you may be locked into the motor of the AF unit. Try on out in a store first before you buy it on B&H.

Thanks for the advice Scott. I think I am just going to purchase the Zeiss 50mm lens on the Letus website because I know they will work without a hitch. It would be nice to find a cheaper alternative though...

i might just start saving up and get a used letus, rails and monitor. or sell everything and wait for the red scarlet...if it ever comes out

You know, The Zeiss lens is great, But IMO its alittle too overpriced. I am sure you can e-mail Letus or roam the forums here and find out for sure what lenses will work and which won't. My understanding is that you need a lens with Manual Iris control and Manual Focus. Both are covered in that lens.

I live in Atlanta and have the Jag35ST and a HV30. I rented a 85mm Canon lens from PPR, but wasn't too pleased with the results, so I purcased a 50mm from eBay for pretty cheap. If you do buy the Jag for the HV, I suggest looking at the the achromat (to remove the vignetting) and also the flip hack done (for your sanity). I don't plan on using the set-up much until I have both of those complete. I can post up some samples this weekend.
