XH-A1(s) vs HVR-V1U footage

posted this under the sony HVR-V1U area but thought maybe I could get a reply here. Just really needing some advice. Thanks to any and all who respond!

Hey eveyrone,

This is my first post so if I screw up or this has been done to death I apologize.

I am a very new indie film maker (just finished my first short) and I was really un happy with the quality (currently using a Canon XL-1S.) and I am now considering the switch to HD the HVR-V1U and the canon XH-A1 are both with in my budget and what I want to be able to do is get that real "Film Look" (24p? I guess?) So that I can take my movies more seriously and so will other people hopefully?

What I am looking for is that pictures speak louder than words, so who has footage from their own short films on each these cameras that they are willing to share? Thank you so much for your help!

Aaron

Aaron,

I don't have any footage from the V1 however I have used it a fair bit in conjunction with my A1 and the pictures are very similar, the A1 has a slight edge regarding low light though. I would just see which one you get the best deal on.

Thanks Jonathan!

So are both cameras very capable of creating festival worthy shorts? (I realize there is a lot more than a camera that effects this)

Philip Williams April 30th, 2010 12:43 PM

With either camera the ability to create a short film that is festival worthy breaks down approximately like this:
Camera: 0.01%
You: 99.99%

Honestly, I may have overstated the camera's importance.

Ha ha ha! Thanks Phil!

Yeah honestly like I said perviously I am really new to this and my first short....well....sucked. But I am trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible and learn as much as possible (which film school falls some where in that journey) to make the best possible films.
