DVD delivery - best mode
 

What's the best mode on the A1 if the final output / delivery method is to be DVD?
On the XL2, some folks say that 30P is best for DVD; how abot for the A1..?
(My delivery/output is currently only DVD and web)..

Ross, it all depends on what 'look' you as the director / DP want for you audience to see.

If you are using DVD as your final medium then (as you are in the US and not using Hi Def DVD) it will always be NTSE at 60i.

The A1 / G1 can send to tape 30 full frames per second or 60 interlaced fields. When your DVD is played, the 'look' will either be like 30 full frames because it will play beck using 2 interlaced fields of the same frame every 60 seconds, or with a 60i capture, 'look' more video-esq (sp?) as you will be capturing more movement at 60 fps.

One of the main reasons for choosing 30F on the XL1S was the softening of the image due to the interperlation process the camera used. The XL2 didn't use this as is had progressive CCD's. Having shot both 60i and 30P to DVD on the XL2, in my experience, the results were superb considering the equipment, and my decision to shoot on one verses the other would always be a directors choice.

From my experience with Canons HDV camera is the same.

I may be wrong about this, but my understanding is that Hollywood films are actually encoded to DVD at 24p and that the DVD player converts to 60i when connected to a standard TV. Is that correct or am I full of it? If it is correct, then you could stay in a 24 fps timeline all the way through, just as if it's a filmout, and save some space on the DVD. If it's not true, then...it's a nice thought.
