Capture Issue

Hey all,

first post and total newb question. Ive searched and tried some things but haven't gotten this down yet. I am shooting a doc with my new A1 and i shot some test footage; i really like the way the 24F looks and have decided to use it.

One problem is i cant capture it on a standard DV deck, it wont read for some reason. I was thinking it is because i shot in HD mode but my friend thinks its because i shot in 24p. can anyone clear this up?

I am capturing the test footage off my camera so i switch it to vcr/play and switch the AV-DV in signal setup to ON. I set my capture presets in FCP 5.1.2 as follows
sequence preset: HDV 1080p24
capture preset: HDV Apple Intermediate Codec
Device Control Preset: HDV Firewire

it was the only was i could get picture to show up in the capture mode, the only problem is i can only capture on the fly and not batch capture. Can anyone tell me what i am doing wrong?

The other thing is after i have captured the footage this way i have to render it in the timeline, another thing that has me baffled.

So i guess in short, can anyone please tell me a better way to do this?

Hi Rick,

It's because the deck is standard DV. No way it can read an HDV cassette. Even though DV and HDV use the same little tapes, they're still completely different formats. An HDV camcorder or deck can read a standard DV tape, but it's impossible for a standard DV camcorder or deck to read HDV. Just use the XH A1 in VCR mode in order to play back the HDV tape for capture.

Please post your capture issues in our Final Cut / Mac editing forum as a separate topic. Hope this helps,

My 24p capture settings are:
DVCPROHD-1080PA24 (that's the name in the "Setup For" window

Sequence Preset: DVCPRO HD - 1080p24
Capture Preset: dVCPRO HD - 1080pA24 48kHz
Device Control Preset DVCPRO HD FireWire

It works and there's no rendering.

Hey Bill,

These settings allow camera control, however the capture window in FCP displays color bars and says "Preview Disabled." Any idea what might be wrong on my end? Thanks in advance.
