HD for SD output?

Hi,
If I shoot in HD and then output everything in SD, is there any degredation in quality? My thoughts are that I capture everything in HD for future and then encode for SD out of Final Cut. ie. - webcasts, vodcasts, DVD delivery etc. Any suggestions? Any problems? Any difference in encoding quality from an SD as apposed to a HD file to say wmv, qt h.264 etc?
Thanks in advance
I have XHA1, Final Cut, Compressor, Episode Pro and a CoreDuo 2.16 gHz with 2 gig RAM
