XH A1 does well in camcorder test

a few observations
 

Those are beautifully photographed resolution charts, best I've seen...Wow.

- The XH-A1 shows some clear advantages particularly in the diagonals (1000 lines!) and corners, noise free at the extinction point of resolution, and near absence of moire.

- While the HV10 using Imatest MTF50 software puts up strong peak numbers, when you evaluate across the whole of the image you can see some masking consequences of the bayer filter in the handling of the diagonals and moire, particularly in the borders.

- The FX7 image processor is applying the most contrast, and demonstrating strong resolving power, not as good in the handling of diagonals and moire, and especially noise at the extinction point of resolution.

- The Z1/FX1 while fallen behind slightly in the resolution race, still demonstrates an impressively clean, artifact free presentation that holds up nicely overall, with minimal moire, edge to edge consistency.

Be nice if there was an English versiosn of the site for those of us who do not read German.

i'm glad to have tom roper interpreting these for me! means more than the article.

i have 2 A1s and an FX-1 among the cameras at my studio...and i would confirm that the FX-1 stands up very nicely...matches fairly easily, too, it is just not as fully featured.

They also have a very bad picture in the test...
Who puts his A1 in the middle of SAND!
(I know...the picture is a composition...but still...bad example)

I could make a translation of the test by the way..

It sort of looks like the camera's on its tripod mounting plate attachment, and that's all that's on the sand. No problem either way--it's just sitting there.

A1 versus HD-100
 

I have recently purchased the A1. I have used an HD-100 for quite sometime now, and I find it quite sharper.

I know they are two completely different machines (720p unterchangeable - 1080I fixed lens), but I was expecting more from the A1.

The image of the A1 is beautiful, but to me it doesn't look as sharp as the HD100. All shots in the A1 are done without stopping down the lens too much (I never close more the f5.6).
I use both cameras completely in Manual mode. I realized I haven't used the A1 as long as my JVC, but "right out the box" the A1 doesn't compare to the JVC as far as the sharpness. I preview both on a 42" 1080p monitor, and I use Cineform HDlink to import video from both cameras.

Any comments?

Carlo, are you using the stock or 13x3.5 lens with your HD100? I find that surprising as the A1 should have the same sharpness/resolution as the XLH1 (which is clearly sharper than the HD100). Are you recording the A1 in 24f mode?

GY HD-100 sharper then A1??
 

The HD-100 is all stock and early model (nov 05). I just use a Formatt matte box and AB battery sys. I shot 30F and later 60I with the A1. Never shot 24F. The JVC in all of my monitors looks clearly sharperv (Dell 24" FP05, Sceptre X2 42" 1080P). I used the A1 trying to stay between 2.8 - 5.6. I don't use gain (I'd rather slow down the shutter speed if not enough light).

It's just a litte frustrating. I was expecting to see a sharper picture from this so highly rated camera...

Do you think I should send it in for service?? I have had the comera (A1) for only one month... Any suggestion welcome.

By the way, I just got off your site: GREAT stuff, is your HD-100 stock!!!??????

Hi Carlo, maybe the HD100 is more awesome than we think :-) Another thing to check is the detail settings for both cameras. Who knows? Maybe component output just yields better pictures for progressive cameras. Or maybe the cables are switched - he he.

Seriously, from what I've read and seen from it's bigger brother, the A1 should have sharper pictures. But the HD100 is no slouch in the resolution charts either.

Thanks for checking out my web site. I desperately need to update that site. And yes, I use the stock 16x. Great lens - no matter what people say about it.
