XH-A1 Aspect Ratio
 

Hey. I've been looking at a lot of the footage from the XH-A1 and I noticed a lot of the footage, especially from Steve and Marlon Torres have a (I'm guessing) 2.39:1 aspect ratio (like that of film). I was wondering if the XH-A1 can shoot in that aspect ratio or if that's something done in post.

I should be getting it within the next week. Yay graduation presents! XD

Here is how I understand film aspect ratios(please correct me if I'm wrong):

There are basically two different filming methods the first is filmed as FLAT. This has an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 almost the same as 1.78:1(16x9).

The second is using the FLAT film with an anamorphic lens which will create an aspect ratio of 2.38:1-2.44:1, but the top and bottom of the frames touch each other so they apply a mask that crops it down to 2.35:1.

THE FINAL OUTPUT IS 2.35:1

The A1 has aspect ratio guides that will display on the LCD for 2.35:1. Your A1 will record the entire screen so you will need to apply a mask in post.

There have been many different aspect ratios in film over the years depending on the format used.
For Example... 1.33:1, 1.37:1, 1.43:1, 1.85:1, 2.00:1, 2.2:1, 2.39:1, to name a few.

When I shot film, the aspect ratio was usually determined by the film gate I used in the camera.

That is correct, I was just talking about to two most common used today.
