Capturing audio away from the camera

Hi all,
I'm curious how you capture audio (like the sounds of nature) if you don't have your cam with you? Do you use a digital recorder of some type? tape recorder? How do you capture in stereo? And if you're not using a digital source how do you convert it to digital?

thanks!
Miles

There are lots of small and lightweight solid state digital recorders available these days. Many have XLR and/or 1/4" inputs, so you can use any mic you want, including wireless.

Here's a nice little stand alone recorder for easy on the go recording.

For $100.00 more you can get this one (which has on board microphones):

There are plenty more than these, but these seem to be some of the best priced for what you get.
