Pelican Case for my new A1

Ok, I am looking to obtain a new hard case for my A1 and wanted to see if anyone is using the Pelican cases. I had a pelican case for my previous GL2 and loved it.

I am looking into the difference between the 1600 and 1650. So far, I like the size of the 1650, but there is one things that stands out.. The weight difference!!!

Here is the dimension difference.
1600 - 21.43" x 16.50" x 7.87" - http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1600
1650 - 28.50" x 17.37" x 10.50" - http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1650

Now, looking at the above, there isn’t a really huge size difference, but the weight difference is over 20lbs.
The 1650 is 35.6lbs, and the 1600 is merely 14lbs.

While I really like the size of the 1650, the weight seems pretty significant. Does anyone have a 1650? If so, is it that bad to tote around? Are there any good alternatives?

Thanks,
Luke

I dig the Porter Case http://www.portercase.com/
The case doubles as a hand truck for carrying larger cases on top.
So I check the big stuff and carry the Porter Case with camera/mics/litepanel inside whenever I travel outside the studio. That way, even if the other gear doesn't show up, I can still shoot.

I have the 1650 from 10 years ago, it is a little difference now but mine is still in good condition, I use to put 1 DSR300 in it and 1 VX2000, now I have 3 A1s in it, no problem carrying it around because it has wheels. It went on planes back when I can lock the case but not now. That Portabrace looks good too that you can stack stuff on it.

Interesting, I cant seem to find the 5120 on pelican's website or for sale via Ebay.. Any idea if maybe he got the number wrong? or if its maybe a non-us version of a pelican case?
Thanks,
Luke

It looks pretty snug in the picture. I can't find anything on this case as well. I wish it was around and had a shoulder strap :)

He probably meant the 1520.

Im using a StormCase 2750 for my XH-A1, Matte Box, Wide Angle, Marshall Monitor, Batteries & such.

I use a Pelicase 1550 - fits the XHA1 in along with various bits and pieces(radio mic,cleaning things,tapes,etc)
The main advantage of the 1550 is that it's the maximum allowable size for aircraft hand luggage.

Yeah, that's a 1520.

I use one for my A1 and find it excellent.

What's the SMALLEST pelicase an XHA1 will fit in? I do a lot of sea kayaking and whitewater kayaking and need the smallest box possible to fit through hatches and behind seats etc.

Bill Watson July 18th, 2007 04:16 AM

Forget it.

I do a lot of kayaking too but I use a smaller cam (a pana GS400) for that.

I use an EWA Marine soft plastic underwater housing to protect it when I'm doing any hand held work and a hard shell Aqua Cam housing when conditions are a bit rough.

I don't see the A1 as being a cam I'd use in that environment as the protective gear would be way too bulky.

Hi Bill, I shoot watersports professionally so a smaller camera isn't really an option for me(although I'm sure that will be open for debate!).
I took a Sony PD170 on a 3 week expedition to Norway and just wrapped it in a duvet jacket and a dry-bag,no problems. My insurance company however want me to keep expensive equipment in something a bit more substantial.
