Don't believe the 8-bit hype. I wouldn't expect simply the fact that it uses a 8-bit DSP to mean that it will perform as badly as described. Plenty of other offerings use an 8-bit DSP. Canon is not stupid enough not to include a 12bit DSP if the XL2's software requires it.

A quick look-over of the cam at a trade show is hardly anything substantial but if the obervations were correct, it is difficult to reason why would Canon put forth such poor footage at the XL2's introduction. Wait and see son... However, I do agree with the shady details on how the CCDs are used in the XL2, instead of larger CCD blocks for the 16:9 mode, it's just higher density masked off 1/3" blocks. The way its 4:3 mode is designed should provide for some substandard quality footage... compared to other cams that uses the full 1/3" CCD

I'm a big fan of reading criticism in context and from the source, then judging the validity for myself. Here's a link to the original thread where this quote came from. The poster is named Mitch, and the material quoted above starts on the 3rd page, although the entire thread is very interesting. If you're curious about what all was discussed, this is certainly the way to go.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Panasonic fake," but Mitch Gross honestly wrote exactly what he felt based on his experience at that trade show. The link which Nicholi provided above should be read in full. This one report, or that is, just a particular portion of it has been pasted all over the web entirely out of context. Nicholi's link is pretty much the full story.

I just got to the idea that the only reasonable way not to get crazy is wait for actual user reports after the XL2, anyway my great hope, is shipped....

How are you doing?

You stated "anyway my great hope, is shipped....", implying perhaps that you have made a purchase decision? Was merely jesting with you in that deciding upon which editing solution to use can be just as important (and overwhleming for some people) as deciding upon a camera solution.

So, what did you mean by writing "is shipped"?

I believe he was saying that the only reasonable way to make any judgement on the XL2 was to wait for reviews from actual users after the XL2 is shipped.

As you can see English is actually not my native language so maybe that's the issue here. I believed "is shipped" in English meant that the product is open for sale, was I wrong?

Anyway this is not the language forum so maybe let's just drop it.

Well I just visited the thread at this esteemed site of cinematography "professionals" and was kind of stunned at:

a.) the level of immmaturity

b.) the lack of intelligent discourse

c.) the conjecture based on heresay regarding obvious subjective experience

d.) the lack of reasonable moderation

What my brief visit did provide me, was renewed respect for the way this little place is run (even though I've bumped into couple of walls here). I'm pleased that the time I have had a chance to spend in any forum has been limited to this one. The lack of rancour, the clean and impartial sharing of information while allowing for fair opinions has made dvinfo the only place I spend any time.

I was also struck by Chris' reserve in his responses...I'd have come out swinging, but that's my weakness.

The one other observation I'd like to make is the sense that this site is, for the lack of a better term an "amateur group" where that site had an elevated status and a higher level of members therefore more valid opinions. If I may...bullshit.

I have had more solid, helpful and professional input drectly from people like Ken and Don and Chris etc., and indirectly from searches with people like Douglas S.E., and ya know what...probably a bunch of folks who might be 20 years old for all I know.

Not having read anymore than that thread, I can't really judge that world, but my initial impression could be summed up in two words: pretentious and hostile.

Neither of those things could ever be said about this place, and I'd venture that the opinions and information are just as valid. Thanks again Chris.
