Has the dreaded black bar gone???

Remember that long thread that went on and on regarding the 3 pixel black bar that appears at the base of every XL1S image? Can anyone say whether Canon has seen fit to get rid of it on the XL2?

As a multimedia developer who shoots footage mostly for the computer and not for TV - that nearly drove me nuts!!!

Also...how's the image quality? I really don't want to hear that tired old excuse line about "Canon has a softer but warmer image" any longer. If the image quality isn't noticably improved (in terms of sharpness) then I will definitely be trading in my XL1s for another brand - especially at 5 grand!!

Ron, you should search for some XL2 screen grabs. There's quite a few floating around, and yes the bar has gone. It'd be surprising if it hadn't cause the XM2 (GL2) got rid of it years ago ;)

I think it has Ron looking at some of those screengrabs.

Black Bars

After working in TV for a few years Digital Tape VTR's, Camers etc will show black Hor. Bars when they need to be cleaned.

This was a specific issue with the XL1(S) Michael where there
was a black border around the footage due to the way the
camera worked. This is/was ALWAYS there. It can be compared
to the TV safe zone, only then always black. People were
concerned with this for web/film output.

It was actually a black bar on the bottom of the frame with a few rows of gradiated blue-tinted pixels on top of the black bar, and a few columns of blue-tinted pixels on the left side of the frame as well.

D.S.E. has captured some XL2 video to Vegas, so I guess I'll have to ask him to analyze those frames and confirm or deny its existence.

He has? Is the post anywhere here Chris, with hopefully links to the grabs and footage? Or at least a rundown from DSE's opinions.

Cheers

He posted about it briefly in this thread, unfortunately he is currently "down under" in the middle of a VASST tour in Oz.
