XL2 -- one "sweet" camera!

The XL2 arrived today. Out of the box it's very impressive. As someone else mentioned here, when you pick it up, you know you have a substantial piece of equipment in your hands.

I shot some initial test footage in all three modes and I'm extremely pleased. Trying to describe the images in words is useless, so I won't even attempt it. Unfortunately, due to Frances and now Ivan, our editing suite has been broken down and safely packed away. So I'm not able to upload any footage, but next week I should be able to, barring any more hurricanes!

So far there are only two things that I would consider negatives; the first is the weight. It is a bit hefter than the XL1s. This is due, in part, to the lens--lots'a glass in there. And that leads to the second minor draw back, it is a tad nose heavy. But those are the only two things I can find remotely "wrong" with the camera. Therefore, it isn't "perfect," and I've seen a camera that was. But hey, I'm not perfect either! If these are the only two negatives I can find, then the positives far and away over shadow those two minor issues.

It seems to be very ergonomic and comfortable to work with inspite of the added weight and heavy nose. I like the new view finder--big and bright! The new rocker zoom is a dream, too, much easier to control a hand-held zoom.

Now I haven't had time to get into the finer details, but that will come with time. However, I've been using all kinds of cameras--still and motion--for over 35 years. I can usually tell within the first hour of use if the camera and I are going to get along. It looks like the XL2 and I are going to have a very tight relationsip for years to come.

Bottom line:
This is a serious piece of video equipment.

Hey Jay, congrats on getting the XL2. I don't know if you remember me but we've email each other on several occasions. Have you gotten any further on you short film project? Now you got a good camera to do it.
