Where would I find my serial number?

I've recently received a new XL2 PAL unit and am going through the motions of filling out my Mack Warranty and customary paperwork. I can not locate the serial number for this unit on my invoice and the manual states that it can be found "at the battery attachment unit".

What is the "battery attachment unit"?

There is a big barcode with a lot of different numbers on the hand-grip/zoom control just to the side of the lens mount.

There are no other numbers that I can discern on the unit anywhere else.

Any ideas?

Remove the battery and look in the well.

Chris,
Look inside the square "hole" where you attach the battery on the right side of the camera. You should see a set of numbers under a barcode... if this is the one you mention, then yes, that's your serial number.

And if there are no numbers at all in the battery attachment unit? (insert sinking feeling)

Edit:
Here's a link to a photo of the battery attachment unit on the camera:

And this is a photo of some official looking sticker on the box. The top one is the same as the one which is located on the camera grip. Which of these numbers is my serial number?

Chris, the sticker that's located on your camera grip -- can you post a shot of this as well?

Richard Alvarez November 1st, 2004 01:47 PM

Yeah,

That doesn't look like my battery well at all... something is weird here.

Here's a photo of the sticker on the grip of my camera:

The sticker on the grip and the upper sticker on the box photo are the same. I am sure that one of the sequence of numbers on these is my serial number. They are in the following format:

(xx)xxxxYxxx (xx) YY (xx) xxxxxxxxxxxx
xxxxYxxx [YY] xxxx

Where "x"= number and "Y"=upercase letter.

Dont know what to tell you Chris, my serial number is a twelve digit number. But I have an NTSC model, not PAL. So perhaps there is a distinction in the numbering system. Anyone with a PAL model care to comment?

Who did you buy the camera from? Was it a dealer in New Zealand or elsewhere?

Chris Mills November 1st, 2004 05:36 PM

Singapore.

I suspect that I am fine in that the numbers on the box match the numbers on the camera. I realise that I am not covered by a NZ specific warranty and that if I run into any trouble I will be stuck dealing with the Mack Warranty for any warranty related servicing.

I am hopeful that this will not be a problem and that it was worth the risk of saving on local prices.

Was this grey market?

Chris Mills November 2nd, 2004 01:23 AM

Grey market means no warranty coverage at all. So technically I don't think this is a case of grey market, though I may be splitting hairs.

While the manufacturer's warranty is not covered in NZ- the international, third-party Mack Warranty is. I would need to do a bit of a dance and potentially be out of pocket until MW reimburses me (should a warranty repair be requried). Other repairs would obviously be covered by standard rates.

I think PAL camera's do this differently. I didn't have a manufacture
date on my PAL XL1S as well (NTSC models did). I don't have an
XL2, so can't help in that regard.

Mike Hardcastle November 2nd, 2004 06:02 PM

My PAL XL2 definatley has the serial in the Battery compartment as stated........
