Hi Ronnie. I'm using a JVC MiniDV/S-VHS deck for capturing. It does save wear and tear on the cameras, and I can leave it permanently connected so I can also use it to convert 1394 DV back to analogue for viewing video from Sony Vegas on a TV monitor while editing. It also has 3 video inputs so I use it as a switcher too.

Another point to consider. There used to be some issues with switching MiniDV tape brands because of incompatible lubricants. I'm still wary about this, so there is a downside to my setup above. I am kinda stuck with one tape brand across 3 different video cameras, because all the tapes go through the JVC deck for capture.
