Noisy Lense

I have the 20x canon lense. Whenever I turn on my camera I notice it now makes a winding noisy. It also seems a bit noisy when I turn the camera off as well. Anyone else experience this? Should I be worried? I assume it has something to do with the autofocus and all of the other other auto features.

Mine makes this too and I'm also a little concerned hopefully this is normal.

i have the same problem (two noise when i put the cam on (one time i had three noises),
i think it's yes focus or sort of initialisation ot the stabilizer.
but all fonctionnality work perfectly, so i don't worry any more
(but they should say that in documentation, or a lot of people would ask the question)

The noise you are worried about is the 20x lens initializing itself when you turn it on. Basically, the servo lens needs to reset itself every time you turn the camera on. When you turn it off, it may make the same noise because there is no power keeping the lens/stabilizers in place.

Check it out yourself, actually: The next time you turn the camera on, look through the lens and you'll see all the little mechanics in where whizzing about. If the camera works fine, there is nothing to worry about.

argghhhh

Hi all,
I came here to investigate the lens noise issue.

My problem appears to be a bit different though. The only noise I hear when I boot the camera is three fairly loud "clunks" coming from the lens.

Then I noticed that when I turn on a ND filter, the "ND" indicator in the viewfinder does not go away after I turn off the ND filter on the lens.

I ended up calling tech support and they agree that the lens needs to be replaced. RATS.

Anyway, this probably does not help, but thought I would say hi....
