Focusing help.

Im doing a live concert shoot with several xl2s and dvx100s. Ill be using manual focus but is there any techniques I should keep in mind for the cameras on tripods. They will be panning and occasioanly zooming. If I focus pass the subject before hand will I have to worry about having to adjust to much while zooming? This may be a really ameture question, but iv not done to much live shooting. Thanks!

I suppose it depends how far the subject will move, and your fstop. I was shooting a seminar last year, of a panel discussion. It was on my XM2, so even more DOF than your XL2 and DVX's. Because I didn't want to go auto focus, I focussed on the guy in the middle of the panel. My camera was about 6m back from the panel and about 8 m to the left, IIRC - so it was a reasonable acute angle. When I moved the camera to pan to other people on the panel, they did go slightly out of focus; more than what I expected. Noticable on a TV screen. So if you're projecting I think it will be even worse.
