OIS Visible?
 

Question, is it normal for the OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) to be visible in shots where there is a glare from say a headlight or sunset?

I have 2 shots from a wedding that I shot 3 weeks ago where in one instance the sunset scene has a visible cast of 2 squares hovering below the sunset and they are moving horizonally and vertically. The same effect is visible in a scene where the limo is oncoming and the headlights are casting the same effect. These shots were done freehand without a tripod so the stabilizer had to do some work.

The shots are going to be hard to use now because after you see this a couple of times it becomes fairly obvious.

Anyone had this happen before, any way to counteract it?

Noone else chipped in on this so I'll just say that I've heard of situations where the variangle lens for OIS does somehow reflect visable light when a sharp light shines into it. A rentable example is the "Rocket Skates" scene in Jackass the movie. Look at all the sparklies around the lights!

This seems to happen more readily with my GL2 then the XL2. When I'm in the dark with the XL2, there's usually no light and all I get taped is black muck :/

That doesn't help much, but yes what you describe has come up before. Now I'm tempted to try it, I wonder if it's less noticable with OIS off?...

I'll pull the scene into Divx tonight and post a link, maybe if a few people see what I'm talking about they might say - OH yea - you're screwed it will always do that, OR if you do x then it won't do that anymore.

This happens tomy XL2 when I shoot into bright lights at night with OIS on. The only way I know to stop this is to turn off OIS. Basically I think it is a light reflection of the moving lense inside itself. Maybe turning ND filter on would help.

The same thing happens when I use deshaker in post. I think that a little bit of glare bouncing around is preferable to the whole shot shaking with only the glare staying in one place. My main reaction though watching your footage was amazement and admiration for how well the OIS on the XL2 is working. A little bit of glare or dirt on a lens really lets you see what the stabilization is doing!

Well I never thought about it that way... yea and this isn't even the section that I would have printed on the final video, I chose this section cause of the objects being more obvious, the last 10 seconds of the actual shot were steadier cause I was solidly planted but none the less the gyro action is still on screen and I'm hesitant to give that to a client. Thanks.

BTW, Laurence this was shot down in your neck of the woods, outside the Kissimmee Civic Center, the ceremony and reception was supposed to have been in West Palm but Wilma put a stop to those plans and they had to move everything north. ML
