Another Preset Discusion - with Frame Grabs

These were the first few test shots with my new XL2. I came up with a basic preset and with the help of others modified it a bit. I am going for a film look with a retro feel for my next film. Ash, suggested I warm balance so I added some examples of white and two warm balances. I personaly like the third one down.

This was shot inside under normal light conditions.

preset settings were:

Gamma = Cine
Knee = Low
Black = Press

NR = Off
VDetail = Normal
Color Matrix = Cine

Color Gain = +3
Color Phase = 0

Red = 0
Green = 0
Blue = 0

Sharpness = -5
Coring = -5

SetupLevel = -6
MasterPed = -6

Hi Scott,

For some reason the XL2 grabs all looked very dark on my monitor. So the first shot looked best on my PC. The other looked a little too muddy. That could well be due to my PC though. I have a Dell and they tend to be darker than most.

This is off topic I know, but I just wanted to tell you that I liked your photos.
I especially like the Hall Curve shot. Do you work exclusively in B/W?

If the warm gets TOO warm, you can turn down the red a couple notches and move the color phase a notch or two toward green.

Colin- at first it was a little dark on my pc as well but I also noticed my brightness on my monitor was turned down a bit. However, it looked nice on my "film" monitor but when I grabed it and looked on my pc I was also surprised to see it a bit dark.

Also, thanks for the compliments regarding my stills. Yes, when I shoot stills I only shoot B+W. I don't know why, but I have this thing with B+W film. There is something about loading B+W into my old F3 that makes me smile. Do you shoot B+W as well?

I only shoot digital now. I use virtualPhotgrapher to do all my conversions to B/W. I used to shoot 35mm and loved using Ilford B/W filmstock.
If my friend and I can work out how to do it I want to eventually make a version of virtualPhotographer that will work on video.

colin this is the fist time I heard of virtualPhotographer...I looked it up and it appears to be a free download/plugin for PS. I'm going to give it a try. I agree with you that it would be great to see this available for vids...so keep workin on it. :)
