setting exposure

Hey Everyone.

I just got my XL2 and shot my first event last night. It was a cancer society relay for life walkathon. Anyway this is my first prosumer camera. My last camera was a canon zr60 so I'm a complete novice when it comes to the features of these cameras. My question is in setting a decent exposure setting. Am I correct in thinking "zebra stripes" are areas of over exposure. If so should I set my exposure to a level that minimizes "zebra stripes" I shot the whole night in apeture priority mode and turned zebra stripes on then adjusted the apeture to minimize the amount of zebra stripes that showed up. I also adjusted the AE shift to further bring the exposure down. Am I on the right track or am I all messed up?

Cheers

Kelly,

As far as I'm concerened you did what I would have done! I saw your post earlier and assumed someone, better qualified than me, would give you technical advice. But I think you got it spot on, there again, I might be wrong!
As long as you've got something on the tape, that's a start, we're all still learning. But from what you said you had done, the picture would be good enough for anybody, if not better.
Best Wishes, Mike.

Thanks Mike.

As I was saying I'm pretty new to this world and I guess I just wanted to make sure I was headed down the right path :-)

Cheers
Kelly

for event shooting, i would say what you did is completely legitimate. without controlled lighting, you will almost always underexpose and overexpose parts of your image. needless to say, the important thing is to properly expose your subject. keep in mind some things should have zebra, like lights, white shirt etc.
