Sound Question using two mics
 

I will be using two Sennheiser mics (lavalier and shotgun)

- ME66 (phanton powered)

- LAV ew100

The first question is how do I set this up?

The second questoin is how do I capture/extract the two seperate sound files?


The way I have it set-up now is:

Under the light grey door on the side of the camera I am using Audio 1 only

Input Select: Rear

Rec Level: M

Set to CH1

ATT set to off

And the ME66 pluged into the XLR CH 1/3

Both ATT on back of camera is set to off and (+48V) is set to on


The Lavalier XLR pluged into CH 2/4

The audio is set to 16 bit


When I shoot I can read and adjust both of the mic's levels. When I capture the footage the sound from the Lavalier is the only sound recorded. I'm not sure if there is an extra step to get the other track from the ME66 or is my set up wrong, or do I need to set it to 12bit??

Be sure that the shotgun is actually powered by phantom power, otherwise you'll fry the mic's electronics. I believe your wireless lav is powered by the batteries in the units. If your shotgun is a battery powered unit, be sure that it has a battery and that it is turned on.

Select 16bit audio, in the audio menu. Be sure that all of your cables are working and plugged all the way in.

Both audio inputs (far left top and far left bottom) should be set on "rear".

The volume controls for channels 1 and 2 are controlled by the volume knobs marked 1 and 2 on the bottom. Check your levels by having each person speak separately and adjust accordingly.

Looking at the back of the camera and the two XLR inputs, the left plug is channel 1 and the right plug is channel 2. If you have the lav lpugged into Ch 1, plug the shotgun into Ch2.

Ideally, the ME66 should be about 2-3 feet away from the subject, meaning it should be on a boompole. If the subject is a talking head, you can get a bracket that holds a boompole, allowing you to position the mic and then run the camera. This is a good way to get great sound because you have the wired shotgun, backed up by the wireless lav.

Mark thanks for your reply. I didn't have audio2 set to rear. Everything worked out fine after that. Both mics picked up nice sound and captured well. Now, is there any way to seperate the two sound tracks? They came in as one.

They should be separated in the left and right earpieces of your headphones. As you listen to them, though, you will hear them simultaneously. If they are mixed in your NLE program, there should be a setting where you can separate the two channels.
