A Bit Confused About Lens Sizes and 35mm adaptors

Hi everyone...

I've recently been looking at 35mm lens adaptors (specifically the redrock M2) and as a result I am now very confused.

Can someone tell me simply what the adaptor does? Does it 'trick' your camera into capturing images as though on a 35mm image plain? Or have I got the wrong idea?

The website for the adaptor also states that it supports interchangeable lens'....saying you can put a 20mm lens on for wide shots, a 50mm for standard scenes, and an 80mm for close ups....

What's confusing me is that its an adaptor designed for 35mm lens'....how does it work when you use a different size lens?

So I guess what I'm asking is this:

1) What exactly does a 35mm adaptor do? (I know how it works, but what is its end result?)

2) How does changing the lens size while still using the adaptor alter the image?

3) If you're changing to a 80mm lens for close ups, I'm guessing your zooming in to get the framing - if so, doesn't that create a decent image size/D.O.F anyway? What's the point, then, of the adaptor?

I'm sorry if this seems like a stupid thing to be confused about, but I'm still learning :)
