3 quick questions regarding the H1 camera
 

1) Will the 3x lens from the xl 1 series fit on this camera and still shoot good HD footage?

2)I'm shooting a music video in HD with the H1 next week and I did want the "film look" somewhat but not sure about the 24 frame rate because there will be quite abit of movement in this shoot. I didn't want the strobbing going on.
So what should I shoot this in to get the look without using 24f? Maybe 30p? Does it have it?


3) I've used the xl 1 and xl 2's alot!! So is there much difference that I should be aware of since I have not shot with this camera at all? I am reading through the thoughts and advice column right now.

Lets try and answer your questions

1 3X Lens will fit but results are not great. Your results may vary. The 6X Wide made for the camera gets great reviews

2 Yes the camera has 30F which might make you happier than 24F. It is your call if it doesn't look film like enough for your production

3 There is enough of a difference that you might not feel comfortable with every control. You should check out the Custom settings to adjust the look of the camera to your taste.

1) Not sure about the XL1 lens (never tried), but the 6x HD lens is nice if you want a wide angle.

2) If you want film look shoot 24F and have a good camera operator. In my experience strobing in 24F/24P usually has had more to do with camera movement than the format itself. The XL H1 does have 30F as well though if you want something in-between.

3) In my experience the most critical difference is FOCUS; very unforgiving in HD so use peaking/magnification features or get a good HD monitor.

The 3x lens is just fine. We've used it interchanged with the stock lens and the manual 16x with no problems. A little cc fixes any problems.

You'll find the 24f will work well for you.

Shot two features over the last 18 months using the above and all went well.

No question about it. The biggest difference between XL1 and H1 is focus. Whenever possible, avoid auto-focus. What appear to be slight variations as the camera "searches" for your focal point are accentuated in HD.

Yes, in HD 1080f the auto focus is useless. It's better in interlaced and acceptable in SD, though.

which mode did you finally shot in? 24F or 30F? I tried 30F recently. The result is very nice. The slo-mo is not as nice as 60i but still quite good.

I went with the 30F , it looked very good!!!!

That's what I am experiencing now. I use both XH-A1 and HV20 in weddings. I have been doing 60i but just not happy with the "home video" look. Now I'm thinking of shooting 30F with A1 and 24P in HV20. The 24P mode in HV20 is actually have pulldowns inserted so it is a 60i stream 30fps vidoe with the 24p look. I will have to find out how good mixing footages from these 2 cameras.

Since you have shot with the XL1, how do you compare the 30F of the H1 to the FRAME mode of the XL1? I believe the FRAME mode of the XL1 is 30P?

I do remember vaguely the frame rate on the xl1 ...I like the H1 alot better...just now seeing what I shot last week with the 30F ...its looks great!!! It's less stroby than the xl1...
