re Close up/Macro project
 

Hi,

I have the standard 20x plus the new 6x Canon lenses for the XLH1.

I need to shoot some dentistry drill bits which are rather small.

On my Hasselblad I would use a set of three extension close-up tubes.

Any ideas for the XLH1 would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,
The EF adapter and a Canon EF (for EOS camera) Macro lens. I guess you may also use extension tubes with the EF adapter and many different EF lenses.

There is also an adapter available at ebay for Hasselblad lens on a Canon EOS body. I have not tried it but then you should hopefully be able to put the Zeiss glass in front of the XL H1! Write if you try it! Could be exciting! Johan

Have spoken with my dealer re Hasselblad adapter to the XLH1 EF adapter if I'm correct.

Will get back when this is all up and running.

Hope the XLH1 itself does not reject this setup.

Hi Mike,
There are a few slightly different adapter models on ebay, please see below or search ebay for "EOS Hasselblad". I also remember there was one adapter which supported one electric function from the EOS body but I cannot find it right now and I don't remember what it did.

I don't think many regular camera dealers have this adapter in stock. Ebay is probably the best place to find it.

You are going completely manual with aperture and focus of course. I think you have to try or calculate what will come out of this combination with the EF adapter too. With a 100 mm EF Macro lens and the EF adapter you can record butterflies from a meter away so you don't scare them. And if you put on your 55 mm Hasselblad extension tube and/or Canon EF extension you will get even closer and get an even more strange XL H1.

If you get the EF adapter you can cut a toilet paper roll and hold it between the Hasselblad lens and the EF adapter to just see what it will look like before you run away and spend money on the adapter.

BTW, you have done some really great car photograps! I liked them and I will tell a friend who photographs for Porsche in Sweden to have a look.

Hi Mike,

I use the H1 with Canon's 180 macro alot of the time for my nature subjects. You can get a shorter macro lens such as the Tamron 90 or Sigma 105 as that will relieve you the need to get a long lens support.

Take note that if you are pulling focus, you will need way more light as you will need to stay at a constant aperture which is about 5.6. You can get f/4.5 with the Canon 180 but as you focus closer, you lose light and its like a very bad iris-pulling effect.

Have just purchased adapter in Germany.

Will recieve on friday GMT.

Lens Mount Adapter for Hasselblad Lenses on Canon EOS EF-Bayonet Mount.

Compatible with every Hasselblad lens and every Canon EOS SLR or DSLR body. It is easy to attach and detach.

Have also purchased the XL adapter for EF and EOS lenses.

I hope the adapter will not short out the electrical circuit of the XLH1.

What do you think.

Hi Mike,
I don't think the "Hasselblad adapter" will short circuit those contacts on the front end of the Canon EF adapter XL. Otherwise it would short circuit the similar contacts on any Canon EOS body too. And those contacts need to be similar because they are made for the same EF lenses.

It will be interesting to hear how the picture quality will turn out with the combination. Remember to keep the XL H1 power switch off when you fiddle with the adapter and lenses. /Johan

Right, connected XL adapter, Hasselblad to OES adapter plus lens to XLH1.

Red warning in viewfinder- incorrect lens. With no image.

I see the little red light on the XL adapter did not light up.

Hi Johan,

Sorry my post was so rushed this morning.

I have it working with an amazingly sharp image.

Widest hasselblad lens is a 40mm which when coupled with the XLH1 still on the longish side.

Full open stop at F4. Need a fair bit of light.

Very crisp image and narrow DOP.

No lens still flashing in viewfinder.

Lens weighs approx 1.4 Kg. Hope this is not to heavey.

I can email a close-up diopter lens calculation file as well that will give you the minimum object distance with your various focus distances etc.

That would be interesting to see.

The Hasselblad 40mm has a feature to focus as close as half a meter.

These lenses also give a very short DOF which is great and very sharp.

Will do a test also with a couple of extension tubes to see what I get.

When you think of it these old hasselblad lenses are very well priced today.

40mm and the longer say 200mm would need a bit of support.
