A walk along Heidelberg's evocatively illuminated pedestrian zone
takes you to some of the Old City's lovely historic squares. This is
where you can fi nd delicious seasonal specialties and countless ideas
for gifts offered in charmingly decorated wooden huts. Directly below
Heidelberg's famous Castle, one of Germany's most attractive outdoor
ice-skating rinks offers Yuletide fun for young and old.
Traditionally, the first day of the Christmas Market -- this year, on
Wednesday, November 21 -- includes the offi cial opening ceremony in
front of the City Hall on Marktplatz at 5 p.m. During this festive event,
the fi gure of the Christkind ('Child Jesus') attended by angels sings
seasonal carols and songs accompanied by a live band. The Christmas
Market and skating rink open earlier, at 11 a.m., on the same day
