Had a look at these and...


unfortunately....

I can see chromatic aberrations (OUCH) which manifest as purple green fringing

I also see a rather nasty case of blue ghosts - that is - a clear echo or ghost which appears only in the blue channel (steeple footage - clocher zoom)

body only version please Canon :)

John, could you be more preise of your observations. To which file do you denote to? (Did not download them all, so may not have seen the problems you mentioned.)

this is a bad case of the blue ghosting... (blue meanies :) )

FWIW, I have seen the same blue ghosting during the broadcast (in HD) of The Masters Golf Tournament this past year. Seems to show up in high contrast areas next to a white object (such as a white shirt). And those cameras are much more expensive than the Canon offering.

I take your point, and, 'as you only get what you pay for' is the main reason why I would wish for a body only version.

In the marketing material, Canon have drawn attention to a new HD design with glass of high refractive index and special reflective SR coating to illiminate ghosts. OK, high index means you can use thinner lenses which according to theory will reduce Chromatic Aberrations, however thinner lenses are more prone to blue ghosting hence their reason for SR coating. Whatever cost fuction they used for the design IMO has not paid off.

Quite honestly Chromatic Aberration is preferable because it can be fixed in post ( scale red and blue channels) although tedious, however blue ghosts have no such recourse - they are burned into the image period.

Further, most of the clips on that French site are pretty low contrast and I would expect to see worse aberrations for my style of shooting at higher contrast levels.
