24F - any rez conclusions yet?
 

Has anyone be able to figure out exactly how 24F works by shooting A/B shots of resolution charts and moving objects? Is Canon going to provide detailed tech info?

Has anyone tried 1/24th shutter to see if it's natural or electronic slow shutter?

I have to say, it looks pretty good thus far, but moving images do appear very soft, though various opinions of what causes it.

No they have not, but Frame Mode in the XL1 was actually a Panasonic technology, so the question is really "has Panasonic ever provided detailed tech info about the frame mode," as it's the exact same thing found in the old AG-EZ1 and other Panasonic cams from that era. I'm not sure that Panasonic has ever released a white paper about Frame Mode, but Adam Wilt has a great article about it somewhere online. Does anybody have that link?

Not directly. But the left a clue in the manual that enabled the info to be determined. They said "improve vertical resolution by 50%" What this actually meant is that it improved a interlaced 240 lines to around 360 lines or so. Progressive scanning helped despite it being less than the 480 of interlaced and the resulting image is quite usable, even when projected.

It did suffer on wide shots on larger displays, but if you limited wide angle, images were reasonable sharp.

The question is Canon using this scanning trick or are they using on-chip real-time deinterlacing or some yet unknown method?

I think we the changes in the DV and HDV worlds since the XL1 (I'm not sure Canon saw the XL series being used the way the ended up when it first came out) they might change their stance and release some whitepaper info aka the Panny 24p whitepapers. 24p is a huge feature and I'm sure many will try to blow it up to film (esp. HD-SDI) and it would help to know exactly how it works.
