Correct Downconverting

Okay, my rental is almost up and I want to make sure I'm doing this right. In order to downconvert from an HDV 24F to DV, I go into the Signal Setup and select AV->DV. Is this right? The downconvert option is grey, and will not allow me to toggle it any direction. Please let me know if I am missing a step. I've checked the manual, and can't find any other options that I have missed.

Brad,
Are you in VTR Mode when you are doing this?

Check Page 113 of the Canon PDF Manual for Settings on XLH1. Don't have a DSR-1500A manual for settings.

Hi Brad,

Don't select AV-DV, that's just the Analog-Digital converter, it has nothing to do with downconverting HD to SD. I ran into this same problem at SXSW in Austin a little while ago when I was helping someone with their XL H1. Let's see if I can remember how I solved it.

In VCR playback mode, if the HD Downconvert option in the Signal Setup menu is grayed out, chances are the Playback Standard option (also under Signal Setup) is grayed out as well. If so, it's just a sequencing issue regarding the order in which you do things. Try this procedure:

1. Eject the tape. Take it out of the camera.
2. Power the camera off, then turn it on again, into the VCR playback mode.
3. Important: do not insert the tape just yet!
4. Open the menu and choose Signal Setup.
5. Check the Playback Standard option, make sure it is set to Auto.
6. Now check the HD Downconvert option. It should not be grayed out. Select it on.
7. Okay, now you can insert the tape and play it.
8. The EVF display should say "HDV" in the upper right hand corner.
9. However the tiny blue light next to the FireWire jack should be off.

If all this works, then you've successfully selected the HD downconvert option in the XL H1. Good luck,

Brad,

Check out Page 52 on the Sony PDF for DSR-1500A Manual. You may be SOL for dubbing dv signals.

Very Simple

You just need to disconect the firewire cable, put the camera on VCR mode, and once you remove the firewire from the back of the camera, the HD Downconvert option will be available so you can turn it on, then you connect the fire wire, there is nothing else that you need to do

Good luck
