Time Code Missing in Captured Footage

Hello all!

I have the following problem: I shot footage with two time-code-synced XL-H1 camcorders (TC on the master set to free run, slave set to external sync). When this footage is played back on an XL-H1, it shows the recorded time code correctly. So far, so good...

I then went ahead and captured the footage via FireWire to my G5 with Apple DVHSCap 1.3 and exported the resulting MPEG-2 transport stream to DVCPro HD 1080i50, using MPEG Streamclip.

After importing the resulting QT-file into FCP, I noticed that the time code did not travel along, as indicated by Source Time and Clip Time being identical in the time code field of the FCP Viewer-window.

Where did I go wrong? Any and all pointers would be highly appreciated!

Regards,

Ron

There was some discussion about this in an early thread, the jist of it being that DVHScap does not hold the tiemcode. SO my guess is that's where you lost it.

Thanks for the info, Nick! So if DVHSCap is the culprit, will HDVxDV work properly?

TIA for your feedback!

Cheers,

Ron

HDVxDV has preserved timecode for me, as I recall. Will it for your situation? Not sure, but you can find out for free -- download the demo and verify that it'll do what you want before buying it. The video is watermarked in demo mode, but you should be able to learn what you need to know before plunking down the $80.

Thanks for the suggestion, John! I would try if I had the camcorder handy at this time. Since I am renting them, I currently don't, but will again over the weekend. I'll be testing HDVxDV then...

Technically speaking: does anyone know if time code is part of the MPEG-2 transport stream, or whether it is sent in parallel with the stream when played out from a camera/VTR via FireWire?
