Lots of new XLH1 footage
 

Went to Kirkland in Washington today with my trusty XLH1. Here's some shots...some seem a little dark on the computer screen but they look great on the plasma. Also, this is directly out of the camera so I haven't played with anything in post yet. I'm getting happier with my settings although the color is a little intense for me so I'll be knocking that down a notch or two. When I have finally settled on a look I like, I'll post the settings.

Remember, these are just pretty crude tests so I wasn't watching things like horizon lines, etc. :) All footage is shot in 24f. All handheld with OIS turned on. All settings on manual. Shutter speed varied from 1/48 to 1/500.

This is typical footage that the H1 delivers. Having said that, I admire all your work from the dvx. I also have an H1 for outdoor work and I know you're a big fan of 24p/f, I'm curious since you do post much of your footage, could you please post a comparison of the same scene using 24f and 60i? Of the many members who own the H1, you would be the first one on this forum to do so.

If anybody else is looking to share some clips, I've got plenty of server space and bandwidth to go around. If they're shot well and worth watching, just shoot me an email and I'll be happy to host 'em.

I don't want to seem like too much of a newb, but I'm only able to open these in Windows MP and the video is choppy (is this due to 24f?) and in 4:3.

Anything I can do to improve view?

You can download a small app called Media Player Classic (google it) and it will play the files no problem.

I re-viewed the footage. I can't get over the image quality! The rainy junco reminds me of a trip to Costa Rica in '93. I had a Canon L1 back then (Hi8) interchangeble lens. That was pre XL1. I took a few years off to pay mortgages and stuff and will pick up a new H1 next week.

Went to your site and watched Brackendale (my neck of the woods). Nice Job. Loved the soundtrack. Keep up the great work.

quite impressed, this is one of the most interesting footage I've seen on the Canon yet, rich and sharp. Probably because I lean towards nature docs. But was to me anyway quite filmic. Obviously a new toy that would profit from a tripod though, but good otherwise.

steven: as an admirer of the wildlife work you did with the DVX100 series camera, i'm wondering what your reasons were for purchasing the XL H1 instead of the Panasonic HD flavor?

Simply put, I was looking to upgrade to HD and perceived resolution was a big deal for me. I hated the limitation of DV in terms of capturing nature vistas, the horizon trees would always look like blobs and leaves on trees were indistinguishable.

I really wanted to like the HVX but it didn't hold a candle to the Canon's sharpness and detail. I was also concerned that the 24fps cadence would not be as good as the DVX but the difference is imperceptible to me eyes. Also, given the amount of control you have over the picture on the XLH1, getting close to the look of the DVX just took a little fiddling around.

I also like a camera with a little more weight to it. I found the HVX and DVX to be a little on the flimsy side.

The other big factor was just lens reach. Having an HD 20x coupled with a Century Optics 1.6x teleconverter gives me an equivalent 35mm still camera focal length of 1244mm. I never even had half that reach with the DVX and, given that my main interest is wildlife, I will now be able to get close to my subject.

There were many other factors but that's the crux of my reasoning.

Sorry for my bad English - but i have many questions... How can I import m2t without losing in final cut pro? Is „MPEG Streamclip“ the best program for this task? Which adjustments would be perfect for this program?

I really like your internet forum and it already helped me a lot.

Wilfried, yes, MPEG Streamclip is an excellent choice (and it's free). HDVxDV will do well, too, I hear, but I don't know from my own experience. I wonder how much longer it will take Apple to natively support m2t in QuickTime (or at the very least in Final Cut).

NB: still downloading your clip as I write this. It seems to me that you're using an FS-4 HD. Does it work well for you with the XL-H1?

Nice framing and exposure, Wilfried! I just noticed something interesting: I set your clip to loop in VLC and was surprised to see how much the large cumulus cloud grows during the clip-duration. It's hardly noticable to the eye as it happens, but it becomes very evident when the player loops. Fun stuff!

Shot in 1080i50, I take it? Do you remember the shutter speed?
