I'm considering a move from XL1s to XL H1. Because I shoot birds I need long lens capability. I now use a Tamron 70-300mm with EF Adapter on XL1s. Are the following numbers correct.

Tamron 70 - 300mm / on XL1s (with multiplier): 504 - 2160mm

XL H1 20X: 38.9 - 778mm
20X with 1.6 Extender: 62.3 - 1244.8

Any wildlife shooters using the XL H1 with thoughts about whether I should try to use the H1 as is (with 1.6 extender) or buy a longer lens for use with EF Adapter?

Hi Dick,

I use the 20x alone; I´m stoked with this, and sometimes use my 1.6 Extender; work good too. And also the EF adapter with Nikkor 80-200/ 2.8 ED and I´m really happy with the result.
The HDV 16x9 from the XLH1 is really really nice and is superior to the 4x3 SD from the XL1s.
So you would probably be happy either way. And there are lots of good used primes/ 35mm for the EF...

I've used the 1.6X extender combined with Century Optics 1.6X telconverter with great results for many years shooting wildlife and now am using these 2 lenses attached to the lens of the
XLH1 with stunning success. I keep these lenses permanently mounted with lens hood and clear filter and supported with lens rods. If I need more light I'll remove the 1.6X from Canon.

You should really enjoy the XLH1.

I have had years of experience with the Canon L2 and the XL1s with the telephotos and like you am planning to acquire the XL-H1 soon. I intend to use the 70-200mm 2.8 Canon L, the 100-400mm Canon L , and the 500mm f4. I have these lenses and have used them all on the XL-1s. I never tried the 1.6 extender on it, but I did on the old L2 and the picture was substantially softer than with either the normal lens alone or the telephotos. In light of this, I never purchased one for the XL-1s.

That is not to say that it may not give acceptable results, but I would expect the telephotos to give markedly superior performance.
