Anyone know where the VTR setting on the XL1s is?
 

Hi. Does anyone know where the VTR setting on the XL1s is? The video capture program I'm using is asking for it and I have no idea what it is!

I'm not really sure what you need, but the VTR mode (or VCR mode, same thing) is how the XL1 plays back a DV cassette. The mode is a position on the main power dial switch, next to the "off" position, and the tape transport controls (play, fast forward, etc.) are on top of the camera handle, under a panel door. I never heard of VTR before so it threw me off. I know where VCR is though!

Yeah, it can get confusing... Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) vs. Video Tape Recorder (VTR)... as if we don't have enough DRA's (Duplicate, Redundant Acronyms) already.

Well John, I believe they're interchangeable, like VCR and VTR.

Ha! I was amazed when I found out that VHS stood for "Video Home System", not something cooler or more esoteric like "Beta".

I guess if fits right in with the lousy quality!

How about this, Ikegami makes some top-of-the-line broadcast camera gear. Very expensive, prestigous stuff... the HL-55A, HL-DV7W, HL-V73... the "HL" in those model designations stands for... wait for it... "handy looky." I kid you not. A rough Japanese - English translation of portable camcorder, I believe.
