Chris,

thanks for the speedy reply, i'm familiar with lightwave..they have some great stuff, just don't want to throw another 150 at my xl1 when i think i can do it on the cheap??

On the cheap, eh? Well there are two issues involved. First, and most obviously, is the mechanical issue; the ME66 is smaller than the XL1 head fitting. But the 2nd issue is that of acoustical isolation. I've sometimes thought that one could make a rubber bushing that fits inside the XL1 clamp to secure the ME66 securely while offering some additional isolation from camera bumps.

But the ME66 (with its K6 power module) is long. If you stick out too far it will creep into the frame of wide shots. If you pull it back too far it will get in the way of your right hand's maneuvers. I think that Lightwave's top-mounted solution is the best for cam-mounting the ME66. Yes the price is a bit ourageous for this little doo-dad but the video business if full of such petty larceny.

Alternately, if you want to replace your XL1 mic with a more directional shotgun Sennheiser's MKE100 is a pretty good unit -and- it mounts to the camera's top shoe. But, alas, it will cost about as much as the Lightwave unit.

Of course the ideal solution is not to use a camera-mounted mic at all. Your ME66 is really designed with boom use in mind. But, of course, for many circumstances, I understand that's not practical.

Listen to Chris. I bought the same mic and the Universal Mini-Mount from them and they included the adaptive collar to make it fit the camera mount. The Mini-Mount is, for all intents and purposes, invaluable for this camera. The problem I had was that I couldn't fit the Canon mic on the Mini-mount, but one phone call to ZCG.com ( as I check the shirt they sent me for odering xxx Dollars worth of stuff to get the letters in the right order ) and the adaptive collar was on the way.
