sharpness & 30 shutter
 

I recently shot an MTV on 30 shutter. As with my previous shoots, it worked well on the 16X lens.

However, it blurred the image on the 3X lens when at the widest.

At first I though it was the lens UV coating, because it was full of scratches. When I turned the effect (30 shutter) off, sharpness was ok.

Any thoughts on this?

I'm not sure i understand your post. I'd like to try and help, but can you explain your difficulties in greater detail and/or post some stills.

Hi Jeff. I was waiting for my account to be activated, that's why I couldn't reply. For some reason, I can't attach pix.

But basically my problem was that I lost detail no matter how I focus when I was using 30 shutter- ONLY on the 3X lens. This was the case even when I was at the widest focal length.

The UV coating was badly scratched, and at first I thought that was the culprit. Then, when i had to restart the cam, the 30 shutter turned off, then resolution increased. I turned the 30 shutter on again, and it looked defocused. I tried to change focus and there was no improvement. I was basically shooting with no gain, fiters, around 5.6 opening.

Sharpness in the vertical or horizontal direction?

I'm not sure, but I'd say both because it's not similar to loss due to deinterlacing. I'll post a link with some frames when I get back- coz I'm leaving the country tomorrow.

What do you mean with "30 shutter turned off".. You can't turn
off the shutter. Only set it at a different speed.

Shutter speed on XL1 vs XL1s
 

XL1s Shutter speed can be set to anything between 1/8 to 1/15000. The XL1 can only set the shutter speed between 1/60 to 1/15000. 1/8, 1/15 and 1/30 setting must be selected in the digital effects by pressing the D.EFFECT SELLECT Button (p.35 of the english manual).

Mo Zee is right, on the XL1 , 30 shutter speed can be turned off.

i edited a video recently, which, according to the cameraman, used the exact wide lens that i used. He shot the whole thing 30 shutter, and accidentally shot one take with the 30 shutter off. it had a marked improvement in both contrast and sharpness. i have a feeling it has something to do with the scratched coating of the lens, but, again- why does the 30 shutter make it more obvious?

I don't think the image is bad. Increasing shutter might help.
