XL1s Sound problem - FRUSTRATING!!!!
 

Hey all -

I'm trying to lay off a VHS copy of a Final Cut Pro document, using a friend's Canon XL1S as a DV deck. I am running a firewire connection from my FCP system to the camera, then I am connecting the camera to a VHS deck using a standard RCA cable.

The problem? I am getting video through to the VHS deck, but I am not getting any audio. When I plug a headphone into the camera, I am still not hearing audio. It's as if the audio is not making it into the camera at all.

Is there some sort of audio input setting I need to know about with the XL1s? What about Final Cut? Any advice anyone could send me would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, the version of Final Cut I am using is 3.0. Does that make a difference?

You do have the audio cables plugged into the correct connectors on both the cam and the recorder?

Is the camera in VCR mode?

Is the audio in your FCP project at 16bit with a samplerate of either 48k or 32k?

I have to check on the sample rate issue. I do know that audio recorded at a different sample rate from the one specified in sequence settings must be rendered before you can hear it, but I don't think that's happening here.

After I posted the message, I heard from another friend who said he had to get both RCA connectors replaced on his XL1. It leads me to wonder whether this problem is endemic to the Canon XL1. Can anyone supply some insight?

The fact that there is no sound when you plug in your headphones probably eliminates the RCA jacks as the culprits. I would check FCP or some other Mac settings. Restart if you haven't done that yet.

Play a tape in the camcorder. Does it have sound? If it does look at FCP.

Never had any problems with RCA connectors. If a tape you recorded will play on the RCA connectors then the problem ain't in the cam.

You might check to see if you have program audio track muted in FCP.
