I want to record a voice over and was going to do it by recording to a blank tape in my XL1 and then capture that to my pc and take it from there.

Am I going to get good results doing it like that and will the on board microphone suffice or should I get a particular type of microphone?

Any advice welcome as this would be new to me. If this is an okay method any tips on setup, how far away to be from microphone etc

Depends on how fussy you are about your sound. The onboard mic is not optimized for voice, but can work. Be sure to have it close to the person speaking, within a foot to two at the most. It will not be the robust 'radio/talking head' sound, but try it, it may meet you needs.

Visit the Shure.com web site, read their white papers for a quick source of some additional tips on micorphones and recording.

You also need to consider how you are going to synchronize to the video. You will need some kind of monitor to determine whether you are going too long or too short for the segment.

Better still are packages that offer audio punch-in facilities.

What are audio punch-in facilities?

Some NLEs allow you to add audio while viewing the production online. It can be a real time saver and beats doing the offline versions.

Vegas does this nicely....

Avid does this with its audio punch in tool.
