Mini35 Test Images
 

I uploaded some shots onto my web site. These are from the test shoot I did on a feature I'm working on. I used a Pro Mist filter, hence the soft glow effect on the very white areas. Sunlight was bounced from of a 72'x72' silver refector. That was it.

I don't see many test images from the mini35. I'll officially make these public in a few days.

Some of the shots where handheld and I inadvertently switched off the mini35, hence you'll see very crisp black dots in the frame. When the unit is on, the dots disappear. Good thing this was a test shoot.

I'll probably just tape down all the switches on the adaptor to makes sure they don't turn off. Plus, I'll have the AC check the light, for EVERY shot, it will be a part of the camera "speed" call. In the future I hope P+S Technique make a more "durable" or "lockable" switch.

Wow, the shots look cool! I'm impressed by the "shallow looking focus" or depth or whatever to it -- thats the best I can do to describe it. Doesn't look too video-like. Looking forward to seeing more shots. You're probably going to be having a bunch of people drool over this look and the mini35.

So, you only used available light and a reflector? It looks good with the sun looking like it was low in the sky.

The sun was behind a building casting a shadow onto the actors. The reflector was down the ally way reflecting the light down to them.

What lens did you use, Justin?

I was thinking of getting myself a min35. The problem is that i can't afford a 35 lens on it. Are there any way of getting a lens with the same focus capabilities as a 35film lens for under 5000 dollars? Really, under 1500 dollars.... Can i get the same results with 35 mm still lenses? They can be cheap. The mini35 will cost me about 6000 dollars, right? and I also need some kind of adapter? What will the package cost me without a lens?

It's going to cost you around $8200 for the adapter alone. Look for the prices at the ZGC website.

You can get the Nikon mount, and try the slr lenses, I haven't done that to say for sure.

Justin, those images look awesome. Care to give me your adapter? :) I like the lighting and the shallow DoF is always pleasing to me with closish shots.

Yes, this was a mini35 shoot. There is no way that I'm shooting without this rig from now on. It never ceases to amaze me.

Still haven't found the Junior in one of the shots? ;)

Also, one of DVinfo.net readers is one of my AC's for this crew. So some props should go out to her.

Justin, what does the mini-35 offer apart from the shallower Depth of Field that we all know and love about film? Is this it's only + or are there others?

In addition to a tighter depth of field, you get two more things. First, the focal length of these 35mm lenses is preserved. A lot of DP's are used to certain specific focal lengths from 35mm prime lenses. They'll choose a focal length based on setting, field of view and mood. They'll say, "I want a 28mm on this spot right here." The adapter lets them do that while still shooting on DV. It's the language of 35mm recorded on DV. The other thing is the quality of 35mm glass, it's preserved with the adapter. Video lenses just don't compare to cinematic glass. You should see what an image looks like through a Cooke or Arri lens. That's what the adapter lets you do.

You pretty much said it all Chris.

We've been doing some HD blowups from the XL1 and they look damn good. It's all in the glass. Good glass will make the XL1 as sharp as any 2/3" camera.

Overall the esthetic of the images are much more to my liking. The mini35 is worth every single penny I've spent on it. I find it the perfect camera for me and the way I like to work.
