Camera or deck to capture to an NLE?

(I re-wrote the title) This is a mini poll. As the thread sez, if you are recording on the XL1/s, are most folks using a particulor deck to capture to the NLE or the camera itself? (Thanks Sunny)

(If there's another place for this question, please move it)

I use Sony Vegas 4.0 and consider it better than anything else I've used. The most logical interface to be found in any NLE!

I'm using a Sony DSR-20 and Final Cut Pro HD.

I was using Media 100 XS v8 but switched just recently.

Rather than wear out my XL1s heads, I use my Sony PC110E MindiDV camera to capture video. Works fine and is cheaper than most MiniDV Decks!

i bought a brand new (still in the box) canon optura 10 for about $300 delivered to my door from ebay. on the plus side i can take good still pix too as i don't have a still cam =).

it's my 'dv deck'. =). someone else taught me this trick. and i also have a $20 maxwell rewinder. if either breaks the replacement cost isn't as bad as $5000 for another XL2 or repair costs to the tape compartment plus S&H is roughly the same as getting another $300 cam =).

Using a cheap MiniDV camera is a good idea. Since a DVCam deck is about $2000, you can get a half-dozen cheap replacements before you get close to the cost of a single DVCam deck.

However, the only drawback in my case is that some clients provide material shot on DVCam. And some programs run longer than 60 minutes and require the longer (and larger) DVCam tapes.

I use Final Cut Pro HD which for all the NLEs I've tried over the years is by leaps and bounds the best and for the price you cannot beat it.

Up till a short time ago I was using an inexpensive consumer DV camera for a deck but had a friend in an emergency need so I had to loan and subsequently sell to. I'm looking again

I capture my XL1s footage with a Sony PC-1 and edit in Final Cut Pro HD. I use Pro Tools for audio editing.

Capture using a Canon ZR40 miniDV camcorder and edit using Vegas 4.0

Sony Vegas 5 and a JVC deck.

Capture somtimes via the XL1, or sony TRV900. I have got a little sony DV deck but it does not function properly.

Edit using Premiere...

A couple years ago, I remember seeing a P.C. Breakout box that had a mini DV drive in it. I thought it would be great, but heard it was buggy and passed on it. It was only maybe $200 USD?

DSR11 for capturing. Avid XpressPro for editing.

Donie Kelly July 25th, 2004 03:37 PM

Use a Sony TRV22 for capture mostly, I find it's much faster to respond to Firewire commands than the XL1s. The xl1s is slow enought to go rewind, play rewind etc...

Use FCP HD to capture and edit
