White Balance Hints

Hello all:

Having only recently delved into DV by buying an XL-1s, I am struggling with white balance quite a bit.

The built-in settings for daylight and tungsten only seem adequate in some situations. A manual white balance on a white target (back-side of a Kodak grey card) results in far too cold (bluish) a balance, particularly in tungsten light. Thus I have experimented with some 82 gels, and I'm getting good results for tungsten now. But I'm still somewhat unhappy with what I was able to figure out for daylight.

I have read the "green to blue" thread in the general DV discussion, and will continue to follow it. I am interested in XL-1(s) specific tips, though... What are you experienced XL-1 and XL-1s users doing out there?

Any advice would be highly welcome!

TIA,

Ron

The advice from Canon to white balance on an 18% grey bounce card is excellent; this is an old pro photographer's tip. A lot of still photo principles apply to videography...

Most photographic stores.

You can find them at most, but not all, photographic supply stores. They are not expensive.
