XL1s IMAGE QUALITY

Dear All,

I have my XL1s on -3 db for grain, and shuter for 50, and the iris at the full, and not on the frame mode, but the image is grainy,

I wonder if anyone can post IMAGE samples, of there cameras, or samples of work that have been done with the XL1s.

P.s. can i do chrome keying with the XL1s.

Thank you all in advance,

Amr Toukhy

If you can post examples of your scenes (still images are fine) it would be easier to help your image and grain questions. If you don't have a method of posting them, email them to me and I can post your still images.

With this little information it is very difficult to help you. Were
you shooting during the day or night? Was there enough light?
Did you leave your ND filter engaged per accident?

Personally I think your images look fine! You will always have some
bit of grain (or electronic noise) in the picture. It might be that
it was a bit dark in the room (that is a bit hard to tell because
you obviously try to get a picture well lit). The darker it gets the
more difficult it becomes for a camera to capture the images and
to keep the noise down.

Lets wait and see what Jeff thinks of them!

One other question, are you trying to use them as digital stills? If so, I doubt there is one cam out there in either PAL or NTSC that can produce stills of the quality a multi-megapixel still cam can.

Hey Guys,

I have a DVStorm video card, that i see a monitor out preview of the video, and when i do that, i get the actual noise 'am talking about :)

Thansk really :)

p.s. i'll send Jeff the mail right now :) thanks

Another question i was wondering about, if anyone knows TV ads i can see on-line that where shot with the XL1s ..!!

Dylan Couper February 17th, 2003 03:58 PM

Amr, I think if you look under the DV FOR THE MASSES forum here, you will find at least one TV commercial that has been shot on an XL1 by a forum member.

Jeff Donald February 17th, 2003 08:26 PM

If any one wants to view the images they can be downloaded here. they are labeled clip0001 and clip0002. I'm sure Amr would appreciate any comments.

I think they look like average low light level shots. The noise (grain) that is present is not objectionable in my opinion. I think some of the softness is from the aperture being wide open. You might also want to try set the gain to 0db and re-shooting the scene and see if you like those results better.

Thais is really amazing what you r doing for me guys, :)

Thank you all really,

Amr
