zoom noise

hi gang

did a piano concert yesterday. incl. some hands closeups.
even i had the bogen 523 in slow zoom, my on board mic picked up the zoom motor noise....wow

any comments/ suggestions?

we had a power failure during narration...no more field monitor and vcr, had thank god a battery right there.

greetings

Don't use the onboard mic. There are also extenders/isolators that put a cushion between the cam and the onboard mic. ( http://www.dvinfo.net/canon/articles/article45.php ).

I would recommend you save up a bit and shell out a little bit for a nice wireless lav mic that you can put wherever you need it. For this case, a mic clipped to the piano and pointed at the strings wirelessly feeding into your camera would allow you to get consistent footage no matter where you point the camera.

I only use the onboard mic if I have no other options. It'll cost a little, but you should be able to get a decent set relatively inexpensively ( http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/wl...ec4/index.html ).

hello cole,

guess what, i have a set, but not with me. ! my mistake. all the location info came from a fellow friend, but i did not follow up. <G>

but here is an other question/ problem i had.
the shot was from a balcony, so the camera+7" on board monitor leaning forward, even i had the camera all the way back, it was head heavy, and i had to hold on the pan bars all the time.
is here anything i can add to get balance?

greetings

I have never had any noise out of my Canon's, but first try not tightening the mic hold hold clamp so tight. It will hold the mic securely long before it is tight and the mic will be held more lightly, less transfer of noise and vibration.

If you still have the problem, I would say that your overall sound level is too low and you are boosting it in post, or that the lens needs servicing.

Best of luck-----Mike

Karl, with a front heavy tripod, yould need to find a way to balance the camera...you are already using one solution (keeping hands on the bar). Others would be:

put it on a rail system and sliding it back farther so the center of gravity is put back over the center of the tripod.

hand weights on the handle, or fashion a bucket hanging off the back that you could add weight to until it stays level.

prop the front up somehow.

..Same Problem

i shot a few reality bits...therefore i didnt equipt my cast with some mics...needless to say i got this "zzzrzrzrrzzzzzz" sound every time i zoomed in and out...i read online that is a very common problem with this camera...and the external inputs are pretty much the only solution.

I had the motor noise with my XL1S and not it is GONE!!! Follow this link to a quiet camera... http://www.lightwavesystems.com/prod...on/default.asp
I picked my stuff up CHEAP at amazon.com and in the used section at B and H Photovideo.

Here is a little excerpt...

MM-XL Universal Minimount

This Minimount will provide a true foundation presence for high quality audio recording, effectively eliminating zoom motor drone and gear tap noise. Also eliminated is handling and tape transport noise. The Mini-mount is a universal and modular type that enables you to instantly switch to any other mic.
